The Backwaters of Kerala are a chain of lagoons and lakes fed by 38 rivers, and extending virtually the entire length of Kerala state. The network includes five large lakes (including Ashtamudi Kayal and Vembanad Kayal) linked by 1500 km of canals, both man made and natural. Kerala backwaters are an essential part of the lives of people of Kerala and give an in depth experience of the rural and real life in the heart of Kerala. Boat building, prawn cultivation and coir manufacturing etc. are a part of the daily livelihood of Kerala people and are done on the shores of the backwaters. Alapuzha (Alleppey) & Kumarakom are the starting-point of the boat cruises through the backwaters as one reaches Kuttanad, also known as the rice bowl of Kerala, because of its paddy fields.
